Futures position size calculator

Enter your account size, the share of it you’ll risk on one trade and the stop your setup needs. The calculator shows how many E-mini and Micro E-mini contracts fit for the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Russell 2000 or Dow.

The stop is the distance from your entry to your stop in index points. Entries and profit exits are both limit orders. Entry slippage is the buffer added to the entry’s limit price when the order is placed, and it adds to the risk: a 5-point ES stop with 3 points of slippage risks 8 points. The profit exit needs none. Each index loads a stop worth the same $250 per E-mini as that 5-point ES stop (5 points on RTY, 12.5 on NQ, 50 on YM), and allows slippage up to the same $150 (3 points on ES and RTY, 7.5 on NQ, 30 on YM).

The micro card shows the same position in micros, ten to each E-mini; when no E-mini fits, it shows the most micros that do. The shaded line in each card shows what the number of contracts you plan to trade would risk. Contracts are rounded down so the total stays within your budget. A stop can fill worse than its price in a fast or thin market, so treat the total as a minimum, not a maximum. This is a sizing aid, not advice on what to trade.

How it works

Every futures stop comes down to one line of arithmetic:

Contracts = risk budget ÷ ((stop in points + entry slippage in points) × dollars per point), rounded down

Your risk budget is your account size times the share you risk per trade. The stop comes from the setup, not from the budget: if a full-size contract doesn’t fit, the micro contract, one-tenth the size, usually does. Margin doesn’t enter into it. The margin your broker asks for says nothing about where your stop is.

More on sizing: position sizing and stop losses, MES futures and NQ and MNQ futures.
